Gromit was 'nearly a cat'

Creator Nick Park on the return of his animated favourites

comedyGromit was almost a cat, Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park has revealed.

The animator created the enduring characters while at film school in the early 1980s.

'The first idea was about this guy who builds a rocket in the basement of his house,' Wallace explains in reference to what would become the 1989 short A Grand Day Out. 'But he needed someone to talk to.

'It was first this man and a cat actually, but I just found a dog easier to make out of Plasticine .

His comments come in a new behind-the-scenes video also featuring  Merlin Crossingham, director of their new film, Vengeance Most Fowl.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl will premiere on BBC One and iPlayer at 6.10pm on Christmas Day and then be available worldwide on Netflix from Janaury 3.
