Netflix execs thought Wallace & Gromit was obscene

The new Wallace & Gromit film did not make any concessions to the American market – despite having an international audience on Netflix.

In fact the streamer’s US bosses got baffled by the Lancastrian dialect – and even feared the phrase ‘flipping Nora’ was obscene.

Chief Inspector Mackintosh, as voiced by Peter Kay, shouts the expression as jewel thief Feathers McGraw escapes.

But baffled executives asked the filmmakers: ‘Who is Nora and why is she being flipped?’

Director Merlin Crossingham said: ‘We explained it’s not rude or an expletive, just a fairly innocent turn of phrase. They said that’s fine.’

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl was the second most-watched show on British TV on Christmas Day – after the Gavin & Stacey finale –  with more than 9 million viewers and lands on Netflix  from January 3.

Creator Nick Park of Aardman Animation previously admitted the team went ‘a mad with the puns’, telling BBC Front Row’s podcast: ‘They’re quite shameful and quite real groaners at times.’
