London theatre to set up a sketch comedy collective

Inspired by The Groundlings that launched so many American stars

London’s Seven Dials Playhouse is hoping to set up a sketch comedy collective along the likes of The Groundlings.

The original was set up as an improv group in  Los Angeles in 1974 and helped launch the careers of Will Ferrell, Jennifer Coolidge, Kristen Wiig, Conan O’Brien, Melissa McCarthy and many more.

Now the Seven Dials Playhouse is to set up a new 12-week subsidised training and performance programme to help performers hone their sketch and character work in a similar way.

The programme culminates in a public showcase, with selected participants forming a paid sketch comedy residency at the Covent Garden venue.

Around 20 places will be offered on the scheme, which starts in  the autumn and will be open to applications from July. The cost of the course has not yet been announced.

It is one of a number of development initiatives announced by the theatre today, with the others aimed at brining up theatre-makers.

Chief executive Amanda Davey said: ‘This new chapter is about creating meaningful opportunities for artists to take creative risks and to feel genuinely supported in doing so.’
