He directed the very first HBO stand-up show
Marty Callner, who directed numerous American comedy specials, has died at 78.
Having started by directing commercials, Callner is credited with creating the template for the stand-up special, having directed HBO’s first one, An Evening With Robert Klein, in 195.
He was them behind the camera for several episodes of HBO’s 1970s series On Location featuring the likes of George Carlin, Steve Martin and Chevy Chase, before teaming up Mitzi Shore and her Los Angeles Comedy Store to discover up-and-coming comedic talent for HBO’s Young Comedians shows. These included the likes of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Jerry Seinfeld, Howie Mandel, Jim Carrey.
That led to a string of TV specials, including projects for Seinfeld, Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Rock, George Lopez and, most recently, Whitney Cummings.
Journey Gunderson, executive of America’s National Comedy Center, said: ‘Marty Callner was a visionary director whose work shaped the landscape of comedy for generations.
‘From his iconic HBO specials to his groundbreaking concert films, he brought stand-up comedy to life in a way that was both intimate and unforgettable. We honour his extraordinary legacy and the joy he brought to audiences everywhere.’
He also made music videos – including Cher’s If I Could Turn Back Time and Aerosmith’s Dude Looks Like A Lady and music specials from the likes of Garth Books, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears and The Rolling Stones.
