Terry Jones statue appeal hits £100k
A campaign to erect a bronze statue of Terry Jones, on the promenade in his hometown in Colwyn Bay, has now surpassed £100,000 in fundraising.
The Python’s daughter Sally Jones said: ‘It’s amazing, we have had such an overwhelming response from everyone and to have gone past £100,000, makes it all seem very real. When we add in our sales of campaign T-shirts we are now only £15,000 away from our £120,000 target.
Since the Python On The Prom appeal was launched in early September, support has come in from all of the remaining members of Monty Python, as well as fans and friends of Terry from all over the world.
Celebrity backers who have most recently put their support behind the campaign include musician Cerys Matthews, director Sara Sugarman, actor Stephen Mangan, comedian David Baddiel and actress Joely Richardson.
Baddiel said: ‘Terry was a great performer and director and writer. I totally support the idea of him having a statue in Colwyn Bay, both as a comedian and as a half-Welshman!’
Sally added: ‘We are so close to our total, that we are really hopeful that we will be able to unveil the statue next Summer in Colwyn Bay with a big party on the beach.’
She is leading the fundraiser with her brother Bill and Conwy Arts Trust, supported by Conwy County Borough Council.
The GoFundMe page is here – where you can also buy the T-shirts.
