Pub basement becomes dedicated venue

Bath is getting a new comedy club after local fans raised more than £2,000 through crowdfunding.

The basement of The Assembly Inn on Alfred Street is being converted into a 70-seat venue, The Jesters Of Bath, which will offer comedy three nights a week.

It has been founded by local comedian Sam Hawkins, who has run A Pint & A Laugh new material nights at various venues across the city and organised The Poor Man’s Fringe, a grassroots comedy festival in August for those who couldn't make it to the Edinburgh Fringe.

The club will open on October 12 with new material nights on Mondays, rising comedians on Fridays and an opener and ‘big-name headliner’ on Saturdays.

Hawkins said: ‘The creation of The Jesters wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from the local community. In just two days, a GoFundMe campaign raised over £2000, a testament to the strong demand for a dedicated comedy venue in Bath.

‘This overwhelming response has enabled the transformation of The Assembly Inn’s cellar bar into a vibrant new space for comedy.’

Any money you contribute will directly fund more reviews, interviews and features – the sort of in-depth coverage that is increasingly difficult to fund from ever-squeezed advertising income, but which we think the UK’s vibrant comedy scene deserves.
