Writer of the Friends theme dies

...although Allee Willis penned so much more, too

Allee Willis, who wrote the theme tune for Friends, has died aged 72.

She suffered a sudden heart attack and died on Christmas Eve.

 Her partner Prudence Fenton broke the sad news on Instagram, writing: ‘Rest in Boogie Wonderland’ – a reference to a song she wrote for Earth, Wind And Fire.

She also wrote September for the same band, What Have I Done To Deserve This for the Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield,  and Neutron Dance’ for the Pointer Sisters. More than 60million copies of songs she wrote have reportedly been sold worldwide.

Willis co-wrote I’ll Be There For You with several writers, including   Friends creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman. It  went on to be recorded by The Rembrandts.

She was also nominated for two Grammys for her work on the soundtracks for Beverly Hills Cop and the musical version of The Color Purple.

Among those playing tribute online were Bette Midler, Bryan Adams and The Pointer Sisters.
