Blue plaque honours Arthur English
Arthur English has been honoured with a blue plaque at his childhood home.
The tribute was unveiled by veteran entertainer Jess Conrad, as Arthur’s son Tony looked on.
It was revealed from behind kipper tie, a giant version of the neckwear that the Are You Being Served? star was known for.
The plaque was installed at 22 Lysons Road, the terraced house where English was born in 1919. He attended West End Boys’ School, now the West End Centre which hosts regular comedy gigs, and lived in the town until his death in 1995.
English was president of Aldershot Town Football Club and designed the Conference Premier league side’s badge, right, in 1992. He used a phoenix design as it was created following the collapse of Aldershot FC.
The plaque was installed by Aldershot Civic Society, whose chairman Justin Coll told the local paper: ‘Aldershot’s favourite son was always going to be the first blue plaque that members of the Aldershot Civic Society wanted to see. We were amazed at the amount of love that exists for Arthur 22 years after his death.’
