As Richard Gadd calls for more 'dark and complicated' stories to make it to screen

Baby Reindeer and its star  Jessica Gunning both walked away with Golden Globes last night.

However creator Richard Gadd lost out in his acting category to Colin Farrell for The Penguin.

His series, based on his harrowing experiences with a stalker, won best  limited series, anthology series, or motion picture made for television, and Gunning best supporting actress in the same category.

Accepting the show’s award in Los Angeles, Gadd said: ‘This is nuts. The way this city, the way you guys, have embraced this show is unbelievable. It means the absolute world.

‘We’re so grateful for Netflix for giving us the chance to tell this messed-up  story to the world.’

After thanking cast and crew, he said: ‘A lot of people sometimes ask me why a show this dark has gone on to have the success that it has. And I think in a lot of ways, people were crying out for something that spoke to the painful inconsistencies of being human.

‘For a while now I think there’s been this belief in television that stories that are too dark and complicated to tell, that no one will watch them. So I hope that Baby Reindeer has done away with that theory.

‘Because I think right now when the world’s in the state that it’s in and people are really struggling, we need stories that speak to the complicated and difficult nature of out times

‘Any story when done right is universal and all the weird,  idiosyncratic struggles we go through on a daily basis are just as worthy as being committed to screen as any

‘So commissioners, streamers, when you’re totting up the numbers and budgets for this year , remember to keep some back for the little person to tell their story.'

Gunning said it was an ‘absolute honour’ to win adding: ‘I can’t believe any of this is happening to me.’

Nikki Glaser was generally deemed a success for being the first solo female host of  what she called ‘Ozempic’s biggest night’ – certainly landing better than Jo Koy last year.

Despite being known for her brutal roasts, he tone was softer than previous host Ricky Gervais, with little stronger than telling  the celebrities present ‘you can really do anything except tell the country who to vote for’ and quipping that Timothée Chalamet has ‘the most gorgeous eyelashes on your upper lip’.

She had been nominated for best standup comedy on television, but the Globe went to Ali Wong.

Elsewhere,  Hacks won best comedy or musical show TV with star Jean Smart winning best performance for a female actor in that category.  And Jeremy Allen White won the male equivalent for The Bear.

Demi Moore  was named best actress in a comedy or musical film for The Substance, while Sebastian Stan won the male equivalent for A Different Man.
