Dinosaur to roam again

Second series for Ashley Storrie comedy, fresh from its Bafta wins

Ashley Storrie’s comedy Dinosaur has been renewed for a second series, the BBC has announced today.

The news comes the day after the show scooped two awards at the Scottish Baftas. Storrie won the audience award for ‘favourite Scot on screen’ for her role as Nina, while she and co-creator Matilda Curtis shared the gong for best film and TV writer.

Production company Two Brothers Pictures will now go into production on six more half-hour episodes of the Glasgow-based comedy next year.

Storrie said: ‘I’m dead chuffed that the amazing team that brought series 1 to life has been recognised by our peers in the Scottish film and television industry and I’m so excited that we’re getting to share more of Nina and her family’s journey. Who knows, there might be actual dinosaurs this time round…’

Curtis added: ‘I’m so grateful for the chance to get back into Nina's world again for Series 2. Dinosaur is the best cast and crew working at the top of their game and I'm over the moon the show has been recognised by Bafta Scotland!’

Series one of Dinosaur followed Nina, an autistic woman in her 30s who adored her life living with her sister and best friend Evie, played by Kat Ronney.

However, when Evie rushed into an engagement after only six weeks and made Nina her maid of honour, Nina was floored. Forced to reconcile with her sister’s impulsive decision, Nina grappled with what this new challenge meant for her own life.

The first season also starred David Carlyle as brother Bo, Greg Hemphill as dad Ade, Sally Howitzer as mum Diane, Lorn Macdonald as love interest Lee, Danny Ashok as Evie’s fiancé Ranesh and  Sanjeev Kohli as Ranesh’s father Sachin. Casting has not yet been confirmed for the second series.

Sarah Hammond, chief creative officer of Two Brothers Pictures said: ‘We are beyond grateful to be celebrating the wonderful double whammy of news that is Dinosaur’s Bafta wins alongside the green light on series two.

‘This show is so close to our hearts at Two Brothers and we are so thrilled for Ashley and Matilda, whose hard work and talent has been justly recognised with this double win. Thank you to Bafta, the BBC and all those involved for championing our little show – pinky hugs all round.’

Louise Thornton, head of commissioning at BBC Scotland added: 'The whole team both in front and behind the camera have created a warm, funny and poignant series and we’re delighted their hard work has been recognised by the industry with these award wins.

‘ Audiences loved getting to know Nina, played so brilliantly by Ashley, and being invited into her world with all its twists and turns. We’re excited to find out where Nina’s journey has taken her and her family and friends in series two."

Series one of Dinosaur is still on BBC iPlayer.
