Bristol to get a new comedy festival
Bristol is to get another comedy festival, it has been announced today.
The city already hosts the Slapstick festival of vintage comedy in February and the Comedy Garden’s vast marquee in the summer.
But now a more grassroots stand-up event, called simply Bristol Comedy Festival will run from January 12 to 25 next year.
Events include a city-wide new act competition, a roast battle, Edinburgh Fringe transfers from Jin Hao Li, Amy Matthews, Brennan Reece and works in progress from the likes of Mark Watson, Helen Bauer, Ed Night and Dan Tiernan.
Comedian Harry Allmark, who co-founded the festival and who is pictured above, said: ‘When I first moved to Bristol, I never imagined we’d be creating something on this scale. This festival is about showing off the talent this city has to offer and creating new opportunities for both performers and audiences.
‘After years of grassroots work, it’s a dream to have the backing to grow Bristol into a go-to comedy destination.’
Co-founder Burt Williamson, added: ‘Bristol’s comedy scene has transformed massively in the past few years. This festival, and particularly the competition, is about creating a collaborative environment where new and seasoned acts can thrive together. We’re thrilled to be working with promoters across the city and to see what this festival can become.’
The event is supported by Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District, whose director Vicky Lee said: ‘The Bristol Comedy Festival is testament to the creativity and innovation that defines our city. We’re proud to support an initiative that not only showcases local talent but also brings vibrancy to Bristol’s venues and communities. We can’t wait to see the city come alive with laughter this January.’
The festival is also partnering with Tap for Bristol, which raises funds to tackle homelessness with contactless donation points.
Its official website is here and applications for the Bristol Comedy Competition are open until December 1 here.
