The final episode will be broadcast on Christmas Day and will resolve the cliffhanger of the last festive special, which went out in 2019 and ended with Jones’s character Nessa proposing to Smithy.

That episode scored the highest overnight Christmas ratings in 12 years when it aired, attracting an average audience of 11.6 million viewers.

Corden has said he felt ‘very emotional’ after finishing the final script. He told Chris Evans on Virgin Radio. ‘We will never write anything that Pam says again. We will never come up with an interesting thing that Bryn has done.

‘And we just looked at each other and we were just like, "Ah, isn’t that amazing?" To even have the luxury of deciding to end it and to be in a position where people still care. It’s inconceivable to us – all of it. I just feel very emotional by all of it. Everything.’
