Mel Brooks to receive an honorary Oscar
Mel Brooks is to receive an honorary Oscar, it has been announced.
The comic, who turns 97 tomorrow, will be recognised by the Academy for his lifetime contribution to cinema.
Academy president Janet Yang said: ‘Mel Brooks lights up our hearts with his humour, and his legacy has made a lasting impact on every facet of entertainment.’
Brooks is already an EGOT winner – one of just 18 people to have won an Emmy, Grammys, Oscar and Tony award.
His 1967 comedy The Producers won him an Oscar for best original screenplay and its stage musical spin-off scooped the Tony. He won a Grammy for the comedy album The 2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000, and three Emmys for guesting on the sitcom Mad About You.
The honorary Oscars will presented on November 18 at an LA event separate from the main awards. Also being hailed are actress Angela Bassett, editor Carol Littleton and the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter.
