BBC orders comedy-drama from disability activist Kyla Harris

We Might Regret This also stars Darren Boyd and Sally Phillips

The BBC has ordered a comedy-drama about a Canadian quadriplegic moving to London.

We Might Regret This stars disability activist Kyla Harris, who also co-wrote the script, as the central character Freya alongside The Outlaws actor Darren Boyd as Abe.

The couple had a high-speed romance – despite a 20-year age cap – prompting Freya to make the transatlantic trip to be with the ‘straight-laced lawyer who thinks he's the old dog that can learn new tricks’.

Elena Saurel – who also plays Olivia in Iain Stirling’s ITV2 sitcom Buffering – stars as Jo, the ‘chaotic and impulsive’ Jo, recruited to be a full-time personal assistant for Freya.

The show is inspired by the lives of Harris and co-writer Lee Getty – both pictured above – who said it will be about the ‘messiest and most joyous lived experiences of friendship, love and disability.’

Boyd’s former Smack the Pony co-star Sally Phillips is also starring alongside Hugh Coles, whose credits include the Katherine Parkinson legal comedy Defending the Guilty, and Aasiya Shah, who played Kareshma in Sky comedy Bloods..

BBC comedy commissioning director Jon Petrie said: ‘Kyla and Lee have created something special, and we look forward to seeing them bring this incredibly personal, funny story to life.’

The show is being made by Roughcut, whose recent credits include Stath Lets Flats and Big Boys for Channel 4. Executive producer Alex Smith said: ‘There's a unique and highly authored show here, which will engage comedy and drama lovers like nothing before. A production bursting with talent in front and behind the camera, we know we won't regret this.’

We Might Regret This, which will air on BBC Two, was originally developed for Channel 4 - where it was previously known as The Odds.
