Blackadder is back

But without Blackadder, just Baldrick

First it was Fawlty Towers, now Blackadder is making a return.

But without Blackadder himself.

Writer Richard Curtis has revealed that Baldrick will be back for a Comic Relief special, but without his employer.

Curtis broke the news  to Gary Davis, who was guest hosting the Radio 2 Breakfast show this morning.

He admitted that he was ‘really nervous’ to reveal the project, which he is currently scripting before saying: ‘For the first time in 20 years, Baldrick is going to be giving some kind of performance.

‘We’re just conspiring about it now, so I think there’s going to be a marvellous, turnip-based thing with Tony Robinson now back in action, so I’m excited about that.’

When asked if Rowan Atkinson might be involved as the title character, he added: ‘‘No, Rowan’s far too serious to do any of that,.’

It comes after co-writer Ben Elton ruled out any chance of the show making a full return, saying last year that neither he nor Curtis ‘ feel any appetite to do that’.

The most recent Blackadder special aired in 1999, while in 2020, Stephen Fry reprised his role as Lord Melchett for Children in Need and Comic Relief’s  The Big Night In lockdown fundraiser.
