Inside No 9 to be remade for US audiences
Inside No 9 is set to be remade for American audiences.
The team who successfully adapted Ghosts for America’s CBS network are working on the project for streaming service Amazon Freevee.
The ad-funded channel was previously known as IMDb TV, but was rebranded last month. And at a broadcast industry event called NewFronts in New York last night, the company announced a new slate of programming for the platform, including Inside No 9.
Creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith are among the executive producers on the remake, along with Josh Cole and Angie Stephenson from BBC Studios
Following the announcement that the show was in development, Pemberton said on Twitter: ‘Let the fantasy re-casting begin!'
Amazon say: ‘Based on the BBC’s award-winning anthology series, Inside No. 9 mixes humour with horror, crime, and suspense, with each episode loosely linked via the inclusion of the number nine.’
BBC Studios are working on the adaptation with Lionsgate Television – the same partnership being the CBS version of Ghosts,
In a statement, Lauren Anderson and Ryan Pirozzi, co-heads of content and programming said: ‘Amazon Freevee is a trailblazer in the AVOD space [advertising-based video on demand], reimagining, redefining, and levelling up the quality of content offered by a free streaming service.
‘By developing and programming inspired, fan-favourite original series and movies… and by securing exclusive, highly sought licensed content, we have built a destination where viewers know they can discover and enjoy something new, or indulge in something they already love.
‘We’ve also built a home for talent where their ideas will be nurtured and brought to life, and are building a brand where advertisers know they will find popular, compelling programming.
‘Today’s announcements about our upcoming slate showcase our continued commitment to delivering customers the premium content they crave—always free of charge.’
Freevee is available in the UK as a PrimeVideo channel on Amazon and currently hosts comedies including Community, Fresh Meat and Two Broke Girls as well as dramas including The West Wing and reality shows such as Hell's Kitchen.
Series seven of Inside No 9 is currently being aired on BBC Two at 10pm on Wednesday nights. However there is no episode tomorrow as the BBC is instead airing a documentary about the failed plan to launch a European Super League football contest.
The next episode, entitled Nine Lives Cat, airs on May 11. Here’s a trailer:
And here’s a ‘sizzle reel’ for the rebranded Freevee shown at last night’s event – although it does not include Inside No 9.
