‘I was delighted to be able to play a wee part'

Liam Neeson made a surprise cameo appearance in Derry Girls last night, delighting fans.

The Hollywood star played Chief Constable Byers, who interrogates the pupils following a burglary at their school.

The show’s creator Lisa McGee tweeted after the episode: ‘ Our code name for Liam during the shoot was ‘ the big fella’ arguably quite an easily cracked code. What an honour to have him in our wee show. Our very own Northern Star.’

The star said: ‘I was delighted to be able to play a wee part of the final series of Derry Girls. I’m a huge fan of the series, the talented Lisa McGee’s incredible writing and the superb ensemble cast.

‘It’s such a unique and special show with real heart and amazing to see the lives of ordinary, funny people living in Northern Ireland during The Troubles played out in a Channel 4 comedy.

‘It was lovely to be back filming there and having fun with them all.’

Fans expressed their joy on Twitter. ‘Absolutely brilliant, well worth the wait. And Liam Neeson just casually having a cameo like it's no big deal,’ said one. And another posted: ‘Omg! Cannot believe my eyes #liamneeson is on #DerryGirls! This show just gets better and better. Think #tedhastings has competition.'

Derry Girls airs Tuesdays on Channel 4, and is available on catch-up on All 4.
