Brendan O'Carroll slammed over racial joke
Brendan O'Carroll has been criticised for joking that no black people have been on Mrs Brown’s Boys.
The comedian made the remark when he appeared on BBC One’s The One show last night alongside Tyler Perry.
O’Carroll was asked if Perry’s older, female alter-ego Madea might make an appearance might make an appearance on his hit sitcom.
‘I don’t know if we could afford him, he’s very expensive,’ Brendan joked.
He then added: ’And so far we haven’t had anyone of his colour in there,’ he added, emphasising the word ‘colour’ while gesturing to his own face.
‘So I don’t know if we could have him in but… I’d love that, but more importantly, I’d love to do another movie with him.’
Tyler laughed at the comments, but also queried them, repeating back: ‘Nobody my colour?’
‘Time to change the world,’ he added.’Diversity rules!’
They were on the show together to promote the latest Madea film, A Madea Homecoming, in which O’Carroll makes a guest appearance as Agnes Brown.
But the joke did not go down well on social media, where it was branded everything from ‘cringe' to‘uncomfortable’ to outright ‘racist’ .
Mash Report writer Tom Neenan asked: ‘Did Brendan O’Carroll just say Tyler Perry couldn’t be in Mrs Brown’s Boys because he’s black on The One Show!?’
Another viewer tweeted: ‘Brendan Carol [sic] just made a racist remark on the one show and not one person called him out. Shame on you BBC.’
And another said: 'Brendan O'Carroll's attempt at being funny towards @tylerperry on BBC One Show tonight was quite embarrassing, I'm sure no malice was meant but that comment was wrong on so many levels.’
At the weekend, it was reported that Mrs Brown’s Boys would be returning for its first full series in almost a decade
A Madea Homecoming is on Netflix now.
