Sky buys Kiwi comedy Wellington Paranormal
Sky has brought the rights to Wellington Paranormal, a What We Do In The Shadows spin-off from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi.
All three series of the show, about two police officers investigating unusual events will be available as a box set from Sky Comedy and Now TV from April 9.
The series, which launched in New Zealand in 2018, stars Mike Minogue and Karen O'Leary as the officers invited to join a new paranormal unit after they bring in a young woman possessed by a demon who can jump from body to body and who is hell-bent on opening a portal to Hades in a city fountain.
For the rest of the series, the hapless duo investigate an alien invasion, a werewolf, a haunted house, creepy clowns and more.
The characters first appeared in the original 2014 film version of What We Do In The Shadows, showing little curiosity about the vampires’ activities.
Jojo Rabbit director and Waititi and Flight Of The Conchords star Clement created Wellington Paranormal and are executive producers, while Clement directed four episodes of the first series. The third season comes to an end on TVNZ2 this week.
The character proved popular enough for the real New Zealand Police to use them to release a series of public information films on health and safety related to the Covid-19 pandemic last year.
