Rosie Jones scoops Attitude comedy award
Rosie Jones has won this year’s comedy award handed out by LGBTQ+ magazine Attitude.
On receiving the honour, she tweeted: ‘ I’m proud to be disabled and I’m proud to be gay but most of all I’m just proud to be me. This award-winning little lesbian is so full of love…and alcohol.’
Accepting the award, she said she was pleased to be recognised by the queer community because ‘you’re my people.’
And she said the recognition was important because ‘I grew up with "lesbian" being quite an insult and on top of that being disabled meant I was already different. For years, I thought, "I’m not gay. I’m disabled - that’s my thing. I can’t tick two boxes. It takes me that long to tick one!"’
The awards were hosted by Tom Allen, with winners including Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift and Stephen Fry, who was named icon of the year.
In an interview with the January issue of the magazine, published yesterday, Jones added: ‘I’ve always needed my humour. Having cerebral palsy means that some people are awkward around you, or don’t know how to speak to you, so from a young age I learnt that if I was able to make a person laugh, it would break down the barrier… it just makes my life as a disabled person so much easier.’
