BBC local radio to boost new comedy writing

...and free workshop places are available, too

The BBC is showcasing new comedy writing across its network of local radio stations this weekend.

Sketches, stand-up, comedy songs and more will be included in a series of Upload Festival programmes running on 39 stations across the UK.

There will also be a live video stream on the BBC website, which will also be available on iPlayer.

And as part of the event, the BBC is running free online workshops on writing both sketches and comedy in general.

Each local station will broadcast an introductory hour-long show at 9pm on Friday, a comedy episode at 9pm on Saturday and showcase of other writing at 9pm on Sunday.

Submissions have closed for consideration in the shows, but places are still available on the course, which are given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

At 2pm on Saturday,  comedian Tim FitzHigham (pictured) will be leading a sketch writing session;  and at 4pm stand-up and top studio warm-up man Mark Olver will be sharing advice on writing comedy for stage, TV and radio.

Another session at 3pm on Sunday is for all writers in all genres and will offer ‘advice and support on getting your words out there, and practical exercises to play with’.
