Writers' Guild announces award nominees

Brassic, Derry Girls and Home up for best sitcom

The creators of Sky comedy Brassic and Channel 4’s Derry Girls and Home are all up for awards from The Writers' Guild of Great Britain.

Danny Brocklehurst, Lisa McGee and Rufus Jones respectively have all been nominated in the sitcom category of the union’s 2020 awards.

Up for best radio comedy are Tom Neenan for The Hauntening; Brenda Gilhooly for Madame Mayor and  Caroline Moran and James J Moran for Prepper,

Best comedy short will be contested by Down From London (Graham Dickson and Liz Kingsman); Paper Trail (Ben Rufus Green); Side Effects of the Pill (Hannah George and Tasha Dhanraj). The first two are embedded below and the third can be viewed on Facebook.

In other categories, Jeff Pope has been nominated for best screenplay for Stan & Ollie and Jessica Hynes for best first screenplay for The Fight.

Katy Brand will host the awards ceremony on Monday  January 13 in London.

Writers’ Guild president Sandi Toksvig OBE said: ‘In such tumultuous times, when truth becomes ever stranger than fiction, we rely on writers to reflect, to inform, to distract, to entertain and to make meaning of it all. And what a lot of talent in this year’s Writers’ Guild Awards shortlist – from page, stage, screen and across the airwaves.’
