Comic seeks working-class trainees for Man Like Mobeen

Man Like Mobeen star Guz Khan is spearheading a new training scheme to help get more working-class people into TV.

The comedian is offering six entry-level placements to people from in and around Birmingham to work behind-the-scenes on the next series of his acclaimed BBC Three comedy.

‘I am trying to leave a legacy here,’ Khan wrote on Twitter. ‘I want to see working-class people get involved in every aspect of our show.

‘These opportunities are rare, but we have facilitated this for our peoples.’

Trainees will work with staff from production company Tiger Aspect in departments such as directing, producing, art department, costume, make-up and camera work.

Applicants are told: ‘You don’t need any specific qualifications, media training or any TV experience to do this job, but you do need bags of enthusiasm, a good brain and a can-do attitude.’

The scheme will run from September 30 to November 15, although the actual length of traineeship depends on each department. And the successful applicants will be paid £550 a week.

To get an application form, email MobeenTrainees@tigeraspect.co.uk. Completed forms must be received by midday on Monday.

Man Like Mobeen revolves around a man trying to raise his young sister in the Small Heath area of Birmingham and escape his drug-dealing past.

Khan created the acclaimed show with co-writer Andy Milligan, and also stars in it alongside Tez Ilyas, Tolu Ogunmefun and Duaa Karim.

When the third series was commissioned, Shane Allen, the BBC’s controller of comedy commissioning, said: ‘Guz and the team capture the spirit and voice of the Small Heath world it depicts and the issues that are important to that community.

‘It’s a comedy which deftly shifts between hilarity and poignancy in bringing us this rich character world and their misadventures."
