At its Los Angeles awards bash

Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is to receive Bafta’s Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year. 

The award will be handed out by the Academy’s Los Angeles branch in October, at a ceremony where, as previously announced, Steve Coogan will receive the Charlie Chaplin Award for Excellence in Comedy.

Chantal Rickards, chief executive of Bafta in LA, said: ‘As a multi-talented actor, writer, creator and showrunner, Phoebe’s sensational work in both comedy and drama has captured the attention of audiences globally. 

‘Her ability to effortlessly connect with the viewer, seamlessly break the fourth wall, and effectively address deeply relevant issues through comedy is truly remarkable.

‘We are honoured to be recognising such a phenomenal British talent, and someone who continues to break down barriers and promote the power of the female voice.’

Waller-Bridge also adapted Killing Eve for the screen and has been recruited to help with the script on the next James Bond movie, No Time To Die.
