Breaking The News leads Scottish comedy award nominations

Arabella Weir, Bill Patterson  and Gavin Mitchell also up for gongs

BBC Scotland’s topical panel show Breaking The News leads the nominees in this year’s Scottish Comedy Award.

The show has been shortlisted for both best TV and best radio show – as it is broadcast on both media –  as well as a nomination for host Des Clarke, pictured, for best radio comedian,.

Rgular guest panellist Elaine Malcolmson and lead writer Neil Bratchpiece are also both up for best writer.

Star nominees include Arabella Weir for Two Doors Down,  Bill Patterson for Fleabag, and Gavin Mitchell for Still Game.

In the live categories, Susie McCabe, Jay Lafferty and Larry Dean lead nominees with two each.

In the TV Comedian category Dean is up against Love Island’s Iain Stirling, Daniel Sloss and his multiple appearances on US late night TV, stalwart Frankie Boyle and Live At The Apollo debutant Fern Brady, the first ever Scottish female comedian to perform on the show.

Judges said that Scottish comedy was in a ‘very healthy state’ citing the opening of the Glee club in Glasgow and Kevin Bridge’s month long residency at The SSE Hydro. The launch of the BBC’s Scottish TV channel has also provided a boost.
