Musical based on Sarah Silverman's memoirs 'coming soon'
A musical based on Sarah Silverman’s autobiography The Bedwetter will hit the stage within the year, the comedian has announced.
Silverman has been working on the idea since at least 2014, when she first mentioned it on the Howard Stern show.
And in discussion with fellow stand-up Mike Birbiglia at the Tribeca FilmFestival in New York last night she revealed that it would premiere at the Atlantic Theatre Company off-Broadway in the next 12 months,
‘It’s a musical. I’m not in it,’ she said – explaining that the production would be set when she was ten years old.
Deadline reports that one of the songs in the show – co-written with Cry Baby composer Adam Schlesinger – would be titled Cursed From The Start.
Written in 2010, Silverman’s memoirs are subtitled Stories Of Courage, Redemption, And Pee and revealed that she was a bedwetter until the age of 16.
During the session, Silverman also spoke about she has evolved as a comedian, admitting that she now though some of the bad-taste material in her 2005 breakthrough show Jesus Is Magic was ‘very problematic’.
‘I don’t stand behind a lot of comedy I did in the beginning,’ she admitted. ‘I can only accept myself and know that I change.’
But she also said people who attack comedians for old material are guilty of ‘righteousness porn’.
