Movie break for Rose Matafeo
Rose Matafeo is to have her first starring role in a movie.
The New Zealand comedian is currently filming Baby Done in Auckland. In it she plays Zoe, a tree surgeon who becomes pregnant and then tries to achieve a list of dreams before she becomes a mother.
Matthew Lewis who played Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films and Corporal Gordon ‘Towerblock' House in the BBC Three comedy drama Bluestone 42 plays her boyfriend.
The comedy film was written by actress Sophie Henderson, directed by her husband, Curtis Vowell and produced by Piki Films, the company set up by What We Do In The Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi.
Matafeo, who won last year’s Edinburgh Comedy Award, said: ‘I’m super excited to be in a legit movie. I failed NCEA level 3 drama, so this is a big win for me
‘I’ve known and admired Sophie and Curtis since I was a little teen fan of the Auckland creative scene and it’s a dream to be working with them, plus it’s so nice to have to an excuse to come back to New Zealand so I can open all the mail my Nan has been saving for me.’
Lewis added: ‘I’m also a big fan of Rose and her work and so to be opposite her shooting in beautiful New Zealand will be a privilege and I’m looking forward to bringing this story to life.’
Matafeo previously had a smaller role in Waititi's New Zealand summer hit The Breaker Upperers which also starred comic Celia Pacquola.
Baby Done will be out in New Zealand and Australia in 2020.
