Accolade for his role as Stan Laurel

Steve Coogan has been nominated for a Bafta for his role as Stan Laurel in Stan & Ollie.

The biopic was also shortlisted for best British film alongside Beast, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, McQueen and You Were Never Really Here.

In the best actor category, Coogan is up against Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, Christian Bale for Vice, Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody and Viggo Mortensen for Green Book.

Directed by  Jon S. Baird and co-starring  John C. Reilly, Stan & Ollie is also up for the best hair and make-up Bafta.

Winners will be announced on February 10 at the Royal Albert Hall, with Joanna Lumley hosting the ceremony for a second year running.

Coogan had also been nominated for a  British Independent Film Award last month, but lost out to Joe Cole for playing an English boxer in a Thai prison in  A Prayer Before Dawn.

But he previously won TV Baftas for best comedy performance for  Alan Partridge's Scissored Isle in 2017, for Alan Partridge: Welcome to the Places of My Life in 2012 and for I'm Alan Partridge in 1997.

And he won best adapted screenplay in the Bafta film awards for the Philomena script he penned with Jeff Pope – who also wrote Stan & Ollie.
