Second Simpsons movie 'in development'
A second Simpsons movie is reportedly in the works, along with a Bob’s Burger’s film and a big screen Family Guy adventure that will mix animation with live action.
There are no further details about any of the projects, but they were mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article about what will happen at 20th Century Fox when Disney takes over the studio next year.
The story says Disney will complete all the films that are in production, but there is a question mark over projects in development, including the proposed spin-offs from its biggest TV hits.
According to the newspaper, ‘people with knowledge of the projects’ described how the film studio is partnering with its TV arms for the adaptations.
The first Simpsons movie was released in 2007 and grossed an impressive $527 million worldwide. A sequel has long been mooted, but making a film at the same time as the TV series proved difficult, and producers are not keen to repeat the exercise.
Last year Simpsons showrunner Al Jean said of any sequel: ‘I would not want it to be anything that we did purely for the money. I would want it to be a really great movie. I personally feel no need for another one unless it’s great.’
The Simpsons 30th seasons starts at the end of next month.
A Family Guy film was first mooted when the Simpsons movie took off, but creator Seth MacFarlane has been cautious about expanding the show’s remit for the sake of a movie. ‘I don’t want to do "The Griffins must save the world,"’ he said.
