Playing a sex therapist with a virgin teenage son

Gillian Anderson is to star in a new comedy-drama for Netflix entitled Sex Education.

The coming-of-age story also stars 21-year-old Asa Butterfield, who played the title role in in Martin Scorsese's 2011 film Hugo .

Here he plays a socially awkward high school virgin called Otis, while Anderson is his mother, a sex therapist  who is ‘tediously open’ about the subject.

Since his home life makes Otis a  reluctant expert on sex, he sets up an underground therapy clinic at his school.

The show is written by Laurie Nunn and directed by Catastrophe’s Ben Taylor. Production has just begun in the UK.

This is Anderson’s first TV role since she quit both The X-Files and Amazon Prime’s American Gods earlier this year. She is also set to feature in comedy movie The Spy Who Dumped Me this summer.
