Fox also axes Last Man On Earth and The Mick

Brooklyn Nine Nine has been cancelled after five series.

Andy Samberg’s cop sitcom was the highest-rated non-animated comedy on the Fox network, but still struggled to find a mainstream audience.

The US broadcaster also today announced the end of fellow comedies  The Last Man On Earth – which has been shown on Dave in the UK – and The Mick.

Brooklyn Nine Nine has been a dependable performer for E4 in the UK, typically attracting 400,000 to 500,000 viewers for an episode.

The show, named after the fictional precinct where it was set, also stars Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Stephanie Beatriz and Chelsea Peretti.

Former Saturday Night Live regular and Lonely Islander Samberg left BBC Three series Cuckoo in 2012 to star in Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Meanwhile, The Last Man on Earth starred  Will Forte as one of the few survivors of some global catastrophe, alongside Kristin Schaal, January Jones and Mary Steenburgen.

The  fourth season just ended with a cliffhanger which now looks set to be unresolved unless the show is picked up by another network or streaming platform.

In the final scenes – look away now it you want to avoid the spoiler –  a crowd of mysterious people in gas masks ominously surrounded the group of survivors on a farm, as Forte’s character Tandy suggested he was going to die there.

The Mick, starring Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Kaitlin Olson as an irresponsible woman charged with looking after her  niece and nephews, also struggled in the ratings and will not be renewed for a third season.
