Gig aimed to 'highlight charity's work with women'

Oxfam has pulled its annual all-female comedy night as it battles to salvage its reputation following the Haiti sex scandal. 

The charity had been due to hold an International Women’s Day gala featuring the likes of Kerry Godliman and Zoe Lyons, and was billed as ‘highlighting Oxfam's work with women’

However it has now conceded it would be ‘inappropriate’ to hold the gig ‘in the current climate’.

The charity is facing a fierce backlash over reports that its aid workers paid vulnerable women for sex in the earthquake-torn nation. Those involved were allowed to leave the charity and go on to work for other organisations without alarm bells being sounded.

Sindhu Vee, Lou Sanders, Mae Martin, Elf Lyons, Abi Roberts, Vikki Stone, Anna Morris, Pippa Evans and Rosie Jones had been due to perform at London’s Leicester Square Theatre on March 8. It would have been the third year of the event.

More than 1,200 people have cancelled their monthly donations to the charity, and today Minnie Driver quit as an Oxfam global ambassador after 20 years promoting the cause.
