Netflix snaps up Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette
Hannah Gadsby’s swansong stand-up show Nanette is coming to Netflix.
She announced the news on stage at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday, explaining the presence of cameras at the sold-out show.
Nanette won the Barry Award for best show at last year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, best comedy at the Adelaide Fringe and shared the Edinburgh Comedy Award with John Robins’s show The Darkness Of Robins.
It is a deeply personal, heart-wrenching show about mental health, sexual violence, and the homophobia she experienced growing up gay in Tasmania at a time when it was still illegal.
In the show, Gadsby says she is quitting stand-up because some subjects are too serious for stand-up – while also saying she refuses to be the butt of a joke, even her own self-deprecating humour, any more.
Her announcement about Netflix was reported by several Twitter users and local online media including Junkee and Pedestrian.
She will be performing it for what’s believed to be the last time in a month-long residency at London’s Soho Theatre from February 5.
A book based on the show, Ten Steps To Nanette, is also due to be published in June this year.
Netflix tends not to announce when its stand-up specials are released, but has been putting out a new release every week.
Fellow Australian comic Jim Jefferies has also recorded his current tour, Unusual Punishment, for Netflix. His show at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith on Friday was taped for the on-demand service.
