Phill Jupitus: I may quit stand-up

Comic says his current tour may be his last

Phill Jupitus has indicated that he may quit stand-up, after almost 35 years in the business.

On thanking his audience for a warm reception at the end of his tour date in Andover, Hampshire, this week, the comic said: ‘I’m thinking of jacking this in and going back to school.

'I’m not saying this is a farewell tour, but if it was, it would be a good way to go out.’

Now 55, Jupitus began his career in 1984 as Porky The Poet, supporting the likes of Billy Bragg on tour.

For almost 20 years he was a team captain on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, which came to an end in 2015 after 281 episodes, and he still makes regular appearances on QI and on Radio 4. But he joked of his 'increasingly rare' TV appearances during his current Jupicilty tour.

He has also had some success in musicals, playing Edna Turnblad in the West End version of Hairspray in 2009, playing King Arthur in the 2011 tour of Spamalot,  and starring opposite Jason Manford in both Mel Brooks' musical The Producers and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on tour.

His Jupicity stand-up tour kicked off earlier this month, and runs until December, ending at the Torch Theatre in Milton Keynes. Dates.
