BBC renews This Country
BBC Three has ordered a second series of critically-acclaimed mockumentary This Country.
The sitcom revolves around cousins Kerry and Lee ‘Kurtan’ Mucklowe in the
Cotswold village of Northleach.
It launched in February on BBC Three’s iPlayer channel, with a subsequent slot on BBC One and has had 4 million iPlayer requests so far.
The series is written by and stars siblings Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper, who said in a statement: ‘We are beyond thrilled to have a second series. We wrote something else in case this wasn’t recommissioned which ended up being exactly the same plot as the BBC drama Life On Mars. So this second series is a godsend really as we can’t do anything else.’
Shane Allen, the BBC’s controller of comedy commissioning, added: ‘It’s been a pure joy to see Daisy and Charlie get the recognition their talents deserve with this show. It has been an instant hit with the audience and they’ve got cracking ideas for the series ahead.’
Six new 22-minute episodes will be filmed in the Cotswolds this autumn, ready for release next year.
The first run attracted praised from the likes of Alice Jones, at the i newspaper, who called it ‘perhaps the most deliciously quotable comedy since Alan Partridge’ and The Guardian’s Stuart Heritage, who said: ‘I found myself rewinding entire scenes because I was too busy howling with laughter to hear what was going on.’
This Country is a BBC Studios production, produced by Simon Mayhew-Archer, directed by Tom George and executive produced by Stephen McCrum.
The first series is available to view on iPlayer as a boxset.
