Peep Show's Sam Bain pens his first play

...to be directed by Kathy Burke

Kathy Burke is to direct a new comedy play by Peep Show co-creator Sam Bain.

The Retreat will be set in a Highlands getaway and revolve around a high-flying City banker trying to discover serenity and escape his past. The tagline for the production, which has its premiere at London’s Park Theatre in November, is: ‘Do you feel lucky, Monk?’

It is the first foray into playwriting for Bain, who also co-created Fresh Meat with his regular writing partner Jesse Armstrong.

Burke, known for her comedy appearances in Harry Enfield and Chums and Gimme Gimme Gimme, has previously directed several productions at Hampstead Theatre, the Tricycle Theatre and the Lyric Theatre.

Bain said he was ‘thrilled’ she would be taking the reins.

Solo, he wrote the 2002 novel Yours Truly, Pierre Stone, which was published by IMP Fiction in 2002.

The Retreat was announced as part of the theatre’s autumn.winter season, which also includes Gyles Brandreth starring in a stripped-down family version of Hamlet, along with his son Benet and daughter-in-law Kosha Engler.
