Scrotal Recall to return
Scrotal Recall has been re-commissioned for a seconds series – but on Netflix, not Channel 4.
The terrestrial broadcaster confirmed to Chortle that the romantic comedy, which it launched in October 2014, would not be returning to regular TV.
Stars Johnny Flynn, Antonia Thomas and Daniel Ings will all reprise their roles in the new Netflix series as Dylan and his best friends Evie and Luke. The premise of the show is that Dylan has to contact everyone he’s ever slept with after contracting chlamydia, and the first series ended with Dylan and Evie's romantic feelings unresolved.
Season one, which was filmed in Glasgow, is already streaming on Netflix in America and Canada, and will be available worldwide later this year.
Creator Tom Edge will write the second series and serve as one of the executive producers.
Murray Ferguson, chief executive of production company Clerkenwell Films, told Hollywood trade magazine Variety: ‘After such a warm response to season one, it’s great to be working with Netflix and BBC Worldwide to bring back Dylan, Evie, Luke and many of the other great characters for another series of Scrotal Recall on Netflix’s global networks.’
At the time of its commission, Fiona McDermott, acting deputy head of Channel 4 comedy, said ‘Scrotal Recall is a brilliantly written modern comedy, a skilful mix of compelling love story, instantly original characters and erm…..STDs. We’re totally thrilled that we’ve got such a talented and exciting cast to bring it all to life.’
Critical reception for the first series was broadly positive, with the Guardian saying that it overcame its supposed '”title first, show second” gimmick' and 'succeeded by turning its high-concept premise into a platform for narrative trickery'. The Radio Times felt it was 'a neat premise allowing for imaginative time leaps' with 'the title does not quite convey the tenderness (as well as the comic brio) of the material.'
