TV: The Yesterday channel airs some rare footage of a comedy icon in Frankie Howerd: The Lost Tapes, a documentary which was first broadcast on Channel 4 in 2013. From pilots and home movie footage to unseen interviews and material from his live stand-up show, the show shines a light on the highs and lows of a rollercoaster career. 7.20pm

TV: It's the New Year edition of 8 Out Of 10 Cats, featuring Isy Suttie, Richard Osman, Joey Essex and Romesh Ranganathan as guests. Channel 4, 9pm

RADIO: It's Jocelyn, the new sketch series from Jocelyn Jee Esien kicks off a four-part run on Radio 4. New characters include the Overly Dramatic Family, a pair of terrible African Drummers and a bad-tempered couple who run a takeaway business. The cast also includes Curtis Walker, Ninia Benjamin and Kevin J. 6.30pm

LIVE EVERYWHERE: What to choose? Probably the comedy club closest to you (use the pulldown menus at the top of this page to search our listings). Or better yet go in January, where you'll see the same quality acts for half the price. Probably our pick of the night is Nottingham's Just The Tonic – cos you get double-unpredictability with Ian Cognito AND Johnny Vegas, for a very reasonable £20.

RADIO: In what should be fascinating listening for all would-be writers, Miles Jupp looks at the plot device in a half-hour show on Radio 4. Or rather pulp novelist William Wallace Cook, who produced a list of 1,462 such maguffins in a 1928 tome called Plotto. Included are such helpful story ideas as 'a ventriloquist, captured by savages and threatened with death, makes an animal talk — and is given his freedom'. 11.30am

RADIO: Carey Marx brings his acclaimed stand-up show Intensive Carey, about suffering a heart attack, to Radio 4. A mix of the dark, the tender and this mischievous is seeks to find the funny side of cardiac arrest.
