Trapped by Storm Desmond

Steve Coogan has revealed how he spent the night in his trapped in his car after being caught up in Storm Desmond.

He was caught between landslides as he tried to drive to his 'retreat' in Coniston in the Lake District.

The 49-year-old comedian spent the night in his 4x4 with only his dog for company until being rescued the next day.

He told BBC Breakfast: 'I went up to Coniston where I stay sometimes in my little retreat and I went down the back of Thirlmere lake and I got stuck on a landslide there.

'I was trying to drive past it in this four-wheel drive because the other roads were blocked and I got stuck in it at midnight and there was no signal on my phone. I had to spend the night there.

'Fortunately I had my dog with me so he kept me company and I'd been to the shop so I survived Bear Grylls style on nuts and berries… but I'd bought them at Marks and Spencer.'

Storm Desmond has claimed three lives, with more rain is due across Northern England this week, with 16 severe flood warnings, indicating danger to life, in place.

Most of the 43,000 homes left without power after the storms have have been reconnected. West Coast mainline trains were also suspended, but Virgin Trains say they hope to resume services imminently.

Coogan was on BBC Breakfast to plug his new autobiography called Easily Distracted.
