E4 orders more Chewing Gum

Michaela Coel's comedy to return in 2016

E4 has ordered a second series of Michaela Coel's comedy Chewing Gum.

The star and creator confirmed the news on Twitter this morning, writing: 'Happy Thursday! Can finally tell you Chewing Gum Season 2 will be on next year.'

The broadcaster has ordered another six-part series of the comedy, described as 'the rudest thing on British television', to air next year.

It revolves around the life of Beyoncé-obsessed twentysomething Tracey Gordon, discovering sex and trying to coast through life with her friends on an East London council estate.

Coel said: 'The love and support for my Chewing Gum baby has been overwhelming and I can't wait to get started on the second series. All I've got to do now is write it.'

Channel 4 commissioning editor Rachel Springett, added: 'Michaela is a rare and exceptional talent; it has been inspirational to work with her on her first TV series and to see how incredibly multi-talented and fresh her viewpoint is, it's extraordinary. We are thrilled to be working with her again on this second series.'

And executive producer Jon Rolph said: 'Michaela’s talent and honesty shine from every word on the page and every shot on the screen. I’m delighted that we’ll get to see more of Tracey and her glorious, unstoppable journey.

The sitcom was adapted from Coel's 2012 National Theatre play Chewing Gum Dreams and has been warmly received by critics. The Guardian called the first series, which aired in October and November, a 'warm, riotous comedy', the Radio Times said it was a 'very explicit - but also super funny - comedy from hot new talent Michaela Coel' and the London Evening Standard said it was 'a vivacious portrait of London estate life, played with the openness and magnificently filthy wit of its creator'.

The cast also includes John MacMillan, Robert Lonsdale, Danielle Isaie, Kadiff Kirwan, Susan Wokoma, Shola Adewusi and Tanya Franks.
