New contract for Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms

Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms venue will be back under old management for next year's Fringe.

The Assembly Festival, run by artistic director William Burdett Coutts, will be back at the George Street venue it operated between 1981 and 2010.

The historic building then closed for a £9million revamp, after which it was taken over by Salt'n'Sauce Promotions, which also runs the Stand and the temporary venues in St Andrew's Square.

The new contract will run from 2016 to 2017 with the potential to extend the agreement for another year after that.

Burdett-Coutts said the site would be a hub for events that mix arts and entertainment with digital technology

He told the Glasgow Herald: 'It will fit as a positive new event in the midst of all the other festivals in August and, in due course, our ambition will be to work with a whole range of partners in the city.'

The tender was won by the Riverside Trust, which encompasses Assembly, Riverside Studios in London and the Brighton Comedy Festival.
