Doug Stanhope intervenes in suicide bid

Drama after Edinburgh gig

Doug Stanhope talked a man out of jumping from Edinburgh's North Bridge after his gig in the city last night.

The comic intervened after spotting a man called Angus at the notorious suicide blackspot on his way home from a tour warm-up gig at the Tron.

He tweeted a picture from the scene, in which he can be seen wearing his light-coloured paid suit, saying: 'Hey Angus I wish you could've saved me from my set last night the same way we stopped you jumping off the bridge'

He told Chortle: 'The word hero is a very strong word, especially the way I'm having it tattooed in 18-inch Gothic script across my back. I will be wearing tights and a cape for the rest of the tour.'

The drama, near the Scotsman Hotel, happened at about 11.30pm – within 24 hours of Stanhope arriving in Britain.

The stand-up talks about suicide in his set, speaking about how he helped his mother take her life in 2008 when she was in agony due to emphysema.
