Matthew Holness directs spoof infomercial

Matthew Holness, best known for cult comedy Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, has directed a promotional campaign for Tango.

The comic has made an eight-minute online film for imaginary shopping channel Smart Deals TV to plug the fizzy drink.

It features a Tango representative unveiling the ‘5 Stages of Tang’ to the channel’s host and revealing novel can-opening device, the Ring Pullinator 6000.

It is part of a campaign that launched during Britan’s Got Talent last month, which has also featured a Gogglebox-style spot capturing Tango superfan Rodney Cloomb’s disappointed reaction two ad breaks later, protesting: ‘No, no, no, I have not been Tango’d’.

Holness’s film was made with ad agency 101 and produced through Moxie Pictures. Also involved in the campaign are That Lot, the social content agency co-founded by comedian David Schneider.

The next ad in the series, featuring Rodney watching the imaginary shopping channel, airs tomorrow. More ads will roll out over the summer.
