Mitchell and Paxman to host alternative election show

Plus loads of comedians in C4's coverage

David Mitchell is to host Channel 4’s Alternative Election Night coverage alongside Jeremy Paxman.

The Peep Show star and recently departed Newsnight host will offer a light-hearted commentary as the results come in on May 7.

The coverage will also feature Richard Osman, Aisling Bea, Kayvan Novak, Romesh Ranganathan, Henning Wehn, Roisin Conaty and Sara Pascoe; as well as special episodes of Gogglebox and The Last Leg with Adam Hills.

Paxman said: ‘Elections matter. But that doesn’t mean the coverage has to be dull. I hope there’ll be room for both insight and laughter.’

Mitchell added: ‘Our aim is to keep people watching much later than they intended and we will be judged by the dip in the nation’s productivity on Friday May 8.’

Mitchell was part of the Channel 4’s alternative coverage of the last election, alongside his 10 O’Clock Live colleagues Lauren Laverne, Charlie Brooker and Jimmy Carr – none of whom will be returning this year.

Ed Havard, head of Channel 4’s TV events, said: ‘This is an unpredictable election and we’ve got a genuinely unpredictable and exciting line up for our take on election night. It promises to be very different, and a lot of fun. Plus we’re on all night so you won’t miss a thing.’

Channel 4 are also airing the ultra-topical comedy Ballot Monkeys in the run-up to the election. Written by Drop the Dead Donkey and Outnumbered creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Perkin, the cast includes Ben Miller, Hugh Dennis and Sarah Hadland.

Today is the last day you can register to vote. Details are here.
