Opening night box office smash

The Inbetweeners 2 has set a box office record after taking £2.7million on its opening night.

It a record for a comedy film in the UK, higher even than its predecessor, which made £2.58million on its first day in 2011.

The original went on to set a record for the most successful opening weekend ever achieved by a comedy film in the UK, earning £13.2million, and ultimately took more than £52million worldwide.

The sequel, set in Australia and again starring Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison, opened in 495 cinemas yesterday.

Despite the success, creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley have vowed there will be no further instalments, saying the current film would 'the last hurrah'.
