Red Nose Day raises £75m

With help from Gervais, Kay, Walliams etc

Red Nose Day raised £75million for charities last night, as it celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Just after 1.30am, Russell Brand announced the total raised stood at £75,107,851 - passing 2011's total of £74.3million.

Comedy highlights of the broadcast on BBC One included:

  • Ricky Gervais reprising David Brent in a mini-episode of The Office.

  • David Walliams and Simon Cowell in a wedding sketch.

  • Anchorman Ron Burgundy for a one-off sketch

  • Peter Kay on what he called the ‘toughest challenge ever undertaken for Red Nose Day’ sitting down for almost a whole week.

  • James Corden reprising his role as Smithy from Gavin and Stacey.

  • Miranda Hart, who completed a Mad March challenge each day this week, culminating in organising a real wedding within hours yesterday

  • New sketches from The Vicar of Dibley, and Call the Midwife teams.

  • Highlights from Mark Watson's recent 25-hour stand-up gig and Graham Norton's Big Chat talk show marathon

Earlier, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, hijacked Radio 2, including threatening Ken Bruce with a vacuum cleaner.

Meanwhile, Labour MP Fiona Mactaggart owes£14,268 after promising £1 for Comic Relief for every reweet. She only left an hour-long window for the offer, but within 35 minutes she called a halt when the total reached the dizzying height.
