Tommy Tiernan reaches for the Sky

'Mental patient' sitcom commissioned

Tommy Tiernan is making his own sitcom for Sky.

The Irish comic will write, direct and star in the show, which will revolve around a discharged psychiatric patient who goes back to living with his with his mother.

The as-yet untitled series of six half-hour shows will be shot around his home county of Meath later this year.

Speaking to Ray D'Arcy on Ireland’s Today FM yesterday, Tiernan said the commission followed a Little Crackers short he made for Sky1 last Christmas.

‘They came back to me and said, “Would you like to do a series?” and I said, “I’d love to. Can I write, direct and act in it?” and they said “Of course you can.”

‘It’s about a fella – myself- just released from a psychiatric hospital who goes home to live with his mother. That’s the premise of the show. That’s the vague canvas of it. It's a bit of craic.’

He also mentioned two other characters: his bedridden father and a brother ‘who’s into bodybuilding’.

Tiernan’s Little Cracker was bout how a therapist advised his father to ‘unleash his inner dog’ and bark out the stresses that were making his marriage difficult.

Tiernan previously starred in the 1999 Channel 4 sitcom, Small Potatoes, Tiernan, about an underachiever who works in a video shop.
