Alice Lowe and Steve Oram’s low-budget comedy Sightseers is to go head-to-head with James Bond’s Skyfall at a prestigious film award ceremony.

They will compete with the taut thriller Berberian Sound Studio for the title Film Of The Year at the Evening Standard British Film Awards next month.

Lowe is also nominated for best actress, alongside Charlotte Rampling for I, Anna and Andrea Riseborough for Shadow Dancer

And director Ben Wheatley has been shortlisted for the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy alongside Chris O’Dowd for his performance in The Sapphires and Seven Psychopaths writer/director Martin McDonagh.

Last week, Bafta faced some criticism for overlooking Sightseers in its nominations. Simon Pegg tweeted: ‘Very sad to see that Sightseers miss out on a Bafta nod. As is often the case, edgy + comedy + beloved cult fav = thoroughly ignored.’

Lowe and Oram wrote the screenplay, with additional material from Amy Jump, as well as starring as two apparently dull suburbanites who embark on a killing spree during a caravan tour of northern England.

The awards will be given out in London on February 4.
