'Weird Al' launches $5m lawsuit
American musical comic ‘Weird Al” Yankovic is suing his record label, claiming he is owed more than $5 million in royalties.
The lawsuit against Sony Music, filed in New York on Friday, centres on money he says he owed for downloads and video.
Half of it he claims from the $1.65million sale of YouTube to Google in 2006. Sony had a stake in the company, which meant it earned a reported $50 million on the deal. At the time, Yankovic’s comedy video White & Nerdy video was one of the most popular on the site.
Sony, which declined to comment on Yankovic’s case, last month offered an $8 million settlement with musicians in a class-action lawsuit over digital royalties.
