Heading for a big fall

Packed touring schedule this autumn

The comedy world is gearing up for what looks like its busiest touring season yet, with around 20 acts announcing autumn tours in the past couple of weeks.

In addition, sizeable festivals in Manchester, Brighton and Sheffield – as well as several smaller ones such as Reading and Harrogate – are giving hit Edinburgh shows a life beyond the Fringe.

The packed touring schedule also marks the continuing diversification of the stand-up scene, with a growing market for solo-shows in theatres and arts centres, as well as club nights.

Among the acts recently announcing tours are:

Russell Kane: Kicks off a tour of Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award winning show Smokescreens & Castles in Barking on September 24, with dates right through to May.

Stewart Lee: An 18-city tour culminating in a three-week residency in London’s Leicester Square Theatre

Jim Jefferies: His UK tour kicks off at the Brighton festival on October 23, ahead of his DVD release in November.

Greg Davies: The Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee is playing 39 dates from October 2 to December 10

Sarah Millican: Another nominee, who has extended her Chatterbox tour with extra dates this autumn, plus a new batch for the spring went on sale last Friday. The tour ends with the recording of her first DVD in London’s Bloomsbury Theatre.

Josie Long: A third national tour from the final British nominee kicks off in Tobermory this Friday.

Jenny Éclair: A 46-date tour of the UK kicks off next week

Robin Ince: Taking his Bad Book Club on the road following the publication of a tie-in book earlier this summer.

Brendon Burns: A 27-date tour, culminating in the recording of the DVD of his latest show Y’know Love n God n Metaphysics n Shit.

Other newly-announced touring shows include Lee Nelson, Rich Hall, Arthur Smith, Jason Cook, The Boy With Tape On His Face, Isy Suttie, Dan Antopolski and Andrew Lawrence.

And big names such as Dara O'Briain, Jason Manford, John Bishop, Rhod Gilbert and Tim Minchin had already announced tours.
